Australian Election too close to call

The final election campaign day is upon us and it seems all Australian polls are pointing to a close run contest. Julia Gillard (herself a welsh born migrant) squares off with her liberal party rival Tony Abbott tomorrow and it looks like she faces a real fight to hold onto office. Our feelings on this are that potential migrants to Australia may be (surprisingly) banking on a Gillard victory. The logic behind this is that the long awaited State Migration Plans (SMPs), which should have been approved in July 2010, would be more likely to be signed off if the government responsible for them gets re-elected. Recent Skilled Occupation list changes and policy shifts would also be more likely to remain in place. Either way there is mounting pressure from potential Australian migrants and Australian migration agents for the incoming government to implement fairer and more stable policies and processing time frames and to appreciate the fact that post war immigration (especially from the UK) has had a tremendously beneficial effect on all aspects of Australian life and economics.
